Colm Burns and Fintan Morrissey of the Irish Federation of Sleddog Sports both made National News when the Irish Independent newspaper published a great article  on their success at the Canadian International Championships in Daaquam last week:
Colm races into record books with 'superb' dogsled finish by Greg Harkin
A SPORTSMAN who fulfilled a lifetime ambition by representing Ireland in the International Dogsledding Championships in Canada has achieved the highest finish for an Irish competitor.
Colm Burns, a 40-year-old electrician, came sixth in the 'six-dog, pure-breed' race in Quebec at the weekend.
The result has delighted sporting colleagues who are hoping his placing will help Ireland secure a top international 'dry-land' event.
Irish Dogsledding Federation secretary Mandy Hines said Mr Burns's achievement was ''just superb''.
She told the Irish Independent: ''It was an incredible result for Colm and for our sport here in Ireland.
''It's the highest placed Irish competitor we've ever had and he was up agaiinst top countries like the USA and Canada.
''Thanks to Coillte, we have the best trails in Europe right here in Ireland for the non-snow, dry-land version of the sport and this will help us secure top international events, which will be a massive boost for tourism.''
Mr Burns said: ''I only took up the sport properly four years ago so to be representing my country in one of the biggest events of its kind was special.
''I suppose my fascination with the sport began when I was very young because I loved husky dogs.''
He said he couldn't believe it when he heard you could race the dogs here in Ireland and decided to take up the sport.
''We have modified sleds for all weather conditions and I do my training in forest parks,'' he said.
Irelands increasing presence in the sport was recognised by the fact the Canadian organisers picked Kilkenny man Fintan Morrissey as head marshall. ''It was a great weekend for our sport,'' said Ms Hines.

Friday afternoon February 10th, it’s a busy afternoon in Dawson City, Yukon, the top five leaders of the 2012 Yukon Quest have all pulled hook and cruised out of town within five hours of one another. They’ve all had their mandatory 36 hours rest so were really cruising as they headed down the Yukon River.

First in and out of town was Allen Moore who, as long as he finishes the race will collect the Dawson Award of 4oz of gold. Hot on his tail was four time Quest champion and former Iditarod champ, Lance Mackey. Lance was less than half an hour behind Allen pulling out of Dawson, and

A great day was had by all at the 3rd Connollys Red Mills Dryland Qualifiers held in Aughrane Forest Ballygar,County Galway, on the 29th of January.
Though the day was wet, the trail was still in good condition with no flooding and with a minimal amount of mud!!
Entries were low on the day, but that didn't stop everyone from having a good time with their dogs. All teams performed well on the day with lots of support for the newcomers.
Louise Jones and her dog Alpha had a particularly successful run, taking a 1st place in the Bikejoring Class, and again in the Canicross class. However, Vivienne Lynch gave Louise a run for her money coming in a very very close 2nd place in the Canicross Class...
Some teams went out for the sheer fun of the run, and both dogs and humans arrived back to the finish line feeling well and truly satiated.
The results for the races are as follows:
Canicross: 1st Place    Louise Jones
               2nd Place  Vivienne Lynch
Bikejoring: 1st Place    Louise Jones
               2nd Place   Danielle Szitas
Scooter:   1st Place    Suzanne Bojovsky
               2nd Place   John Fitzsimons
Rig:          1st Place    Colm Burns
It should be noted that we are seeing more and more non-nordic breeds entering our races, which is great to see, and emphasises the fact that Sled Dog Sports are not just for Nordic Breeds... !!
A huge thanks to Connollys Red Mills for their kind sponsorship of the 15kg bags of Dog Food for all those who placed 1st and 2nd at the event.
