Sled Dogs Ireland – Irish Federation of Sleddog Sports

Development - IrishFSS Educational Resources

Programme for Schools

There are many reasons that children take part in sport, but research has shown that children primarily participate to:
  • Learn new skills
  • Make friends
  • See new places – and have new experiences
  • To be part of a team
  • For the competitive challenge
  • Improve their self confidence
  • To have fun
The Irish Federation of Sleddog Sports recognises the important role that schools and teachers can provide in the promotion and encouragement in all types of sporting activities. This section outlines the resources, and support systems in place for primary schools.

Training Tip:
Recreational Mushing:
Before you begin, take some time out to decide what you really need from your dogs. If you have a young family and you want them to be able to enjoy working with your dogs, it might be a good idea to select dogs that are small and of a gentle nature that would be suitable for children. You could choose older or retired dogs from another team and they could also help train your younger, less experienced dogs.
For more information on training, go to our training section.....

Safety Tips :

Before you go out on the trail with your dogs, always perform a thorough safety check. Inspect harnesses, lines, and all equipment. Make sure there are no breaks or excessive wear and tear. Make sure all snaps, quick release clips and carabiners are functioning correctly, and that there are no tears in the harnesses. Remember that safety precautions are in the best interests of both you and your dogs, and others around you.

Racing:
In your first race, it is often best to start with fewer dogs. Read More..
